This week, let’s explore the notion of tourism leakages in Fiji and examine how community-based tourism initiatives are helping to bridge the gap between tourism revenue and grassroots development.

Leakages refer to the money that is lost from the local economy due to the outflow of funds to foreign-owned businesses, individuals, and governments overseas.

The leakages occur when the revenue generated by tourism is spent outside the local economy, instead of being reinvested in local businesses, infrastructure, and services.

Last week we looked at the need to stimulate investments in infrastructure that in turn would rapidly progress investments in agriculture, business process outsourcing (BPO), information communication technology (ICT), construction, manufacturing and further progress tourism, as well as the SME sector that has the fastest potential to drive economic growth.
While more than 75% of tourism businesses in Fiji are owned by Fijian nationals, there is an urgent need to encourage more private investments to drive a faster economic development uptake, and for this shorter-term impact; support for SME businesses and further tourism growth can drive a quicker turnaround.

As Fiji continues to grapple with the issue of sustainability, the importance of recycling has become an increasing part of achieving this, but just as clearly, our efforts need to be part of an ongoing series of collective actions to determine exactly how we Keep Fiji Beautiful.
Despite the efforts of individuals and organizations to promote recycling, there is a critical aspect of this issue that is often overlooked: the readiness for recycling when there is a far more urgent issue at stake for many of our citizens – waste collection.

As we move into mid-March and prepare for the upward swing in demand; license
and permit renewals have been completed, staff training, upskilling and onboarding
are in full swing, marketing and packaging efforts are being fine-tuned, supplies have
been ordered earlier than usual to try and outwit the dreaded Port of Auckland
supply-chain bottleneck, and preparations are being completed to ensure the
industry is ready for the first real bump up in numbers that usually takes place over
Easter.
With forward bookings already looking strong, we are hoping that everyone,
including our critical SMEs, will be getting ready for the long uphill run to the high
season.
