IHG Fiji Invites World to Celebrate Earth Hour

IHG Fiji hotels celebrated Earth Hour, by building on the core theme of Earth Hour – a clean-up initiative, a ‘Greener Stay’ opt-in and inviting guests to turn off the lights for an hour to raise awareness of climate change and conserve energy.

30th March 2023 (Natadola, Fiji): IHG Hotels & Resorts Fiji celebrated Earth Hour 2023 in a grand way across its three Fiji properties, InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, Grand Pacific Hotel, and Holiday Inn Suva on Saturday 25th March 2023.

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa Management held a briefing at Navo Lagoon to raise awareness about climate change and rising sea levels, as part of Earth Hour.

Furthermore, the team conducted a Green Day beach and resort clean-up at Natadola to protect the ocean, as part of their ongoing commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism. The clean-up aimed to remove waste and debris from the beach and surrounding areas, preventing pollution and harm to marine life. This initiative promotes eco-friendly practices in the hospitality industry.

From 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM FJT, all non-essential lights were turned off, and other lights were dimmed at the three properties with a candlelight display in public areas. As part of the initiative, the hotels turned off all non-essential lighting at the back of the house area, offices, and the resort facade. In restaurants and bars, all non-essential lights were dimmed or turned off, and candles were used as a light source in designated areas. The hotels also encouraged guests to switch off unnecessary lights in their rooms or when out.

Furthermore, the hotels encouraged guests to sign up for the ongoing IHG ‘Greener Stay’ program, which encourages IHG® One Rewards members to opt out of housekeeping services and reduce their environmental impact. As a reward, IHG® One Rewards members received 500 IHG One Rewards points for every night they opted out of housekeeping services.

Kama Lounge & Bar introduced a limited-edition zero-waste cocktail that utilized every part of the pineapple to create a sustainable and delicious drink, without creating ‘food waste’. By doing so, it aimed to reduce food waste and offer an elevated experience to guests on the day of Earth Hour which was very well received.

“We are thrilled to participate in this global initiative and celebrate Earth Hour across our three properties in Fiji. Celebrating Earth Hour is fundamental, and we are proud to be doing our part in raising awareness about environmental issues and reducing our carbon footprint. As part of IHG’s Journey to Tomorrow, we are committed to making a positive impact on the environment, and initiatives like this are an important step towards achieving that goal.” commented Lachlan Walker, Area General – South Pacific, IHG Hotels & Resorts.
