Bid to save shark and ray species

Fiji Times Thursday 09 March 2017 SHARK and ray tourism operators now have a new guide that will help them operate more responsibly.

The Responsible Shark and Ray Tourism: A Guide to Best Practice was released globally last week and provides practical and science based guidelines to help tourism operators and local community members to conserve shark and ray species and raise awareness of their protection.

A collaborative effort by the World Wildlife Fund, Project Aware and Manta Trust, the realease marks the world’s first ever guidelines for shark and ray tourism operators.

Unsustainable exploitation of sharks and rays around the world have been mainly driven by overfishing.

One in four shark and ray species is now threatened with an increased risk of extinction.

Around the world about 400 well-established tourism operators interact with sharks and rays and it is estimated that this numbers could more than double over the next 20 years.  Read more…
