Nadi, Fiji – May 2025 – The Fijian tourism industry continues to lead by example in its commitment to sustainability, with hotels and resorts around the country embracing Rise Beyond the Reef’s fully compostable coffee cups—an initiative made possible in partnership with Portion Pak. By switching to certified home compostable cups and lids, resorts are helping to eliminate hundreds of thousands of single-use plastics from Fiji’s waste streams. The Rise Beyond the Reef (RBR) packaging range is currently the only compostable takeaway cup solution in Fiji with both Australian and EU certifications—making it a clear choice for environmentally conscious operators.
But the impact goes beyond reducing waste.
Through this initiative, the hospitality sector is also supporting vital education projects in remote communities. Proceeds from the sale of RBR cups have directly contributed over FJ$8,000 in funding for under-resourced schools across outer islands—areas that often fall outside traditional development pathways.
Recent donations (Q3 & Q4 2024 + Q1 2025):
- Nairai District School, Natauloa Village – FJ$1,167.57
- Davetarua Primary School, Tovulailai Village – FJ$1,167.57
- Waitoga Village School, Vutuna Village – FJ$1,167.57
These funds are already making a difference, helping to improve educational resources and facilities in schools that often don’t benefit from the same level of support as those on Viti Levu or Vanua Levu.
This collaboration between resorts, Portion Pak, and Rise Beyond the Reef is a powerful example of how sustainable procurement choices can deliver both environmental and social impact—aligning closely with the values outlined in Fiji’s National Sustainable Tourism Framework.
The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) applauds members who are integrating sustainability into their operations and encourages more resorts and suppliers to consider partnerships that support both the planet and local communities.
