Transport hindrance

Fiji Times Wednesday 27 September 2017  IT is quite a struggle to have a ship regularly servicing the Yasawa Group because there are so many forms of movement to and from the islands.

This is the view of Victoria Marine Ltd director Joe Tagi, whose boat the MV Sea Rakino, services the island on a monthly basis through the Government franchise scheme.

The company took responsibility of the Yasawa franchise run from November last year and since then has always struggled to meet the maximum number of passengers of about 50.

MV Sea Rakino has a carrying capacity of 100 people, however, Mr Tagi said they only had 30 to 40 passengers on a monthly franchise run.

“It’s quite a struggle if a shipowner offers regular services to the island because there are so many forms of movements,” Mr Tagi said.

“We are servicing the Yasawas because of the Government franchise run but to try and have our own run will be quite a difficult task to handle and is uneconomical.

“Islanders travel on fibreglass boats, on the Yasawa Flyer and even on the Sea Bus and because two of these boats service the island regularly for tourism.”  Read more…
