Fiji Sun, 03 June 2017 – Over the last month I have had a number of conversations with different people in different sectors of the Fiji tourism industry and often the subject of Open Sky for Fiji comes up.
This is currently a topic of discussion because of the possible interest of Chinese based airlines operating into Fiji and because the same airlines have achieved an Open Sky with the Australian government. This whole question of the Open Sky policy and the benefits and disadvantages for any country, and particularly Fiji, is an incredibly complex one. I am not an expert in this area, but the degree of interest in it is growing rapidly and there needs to be some facts put into the discussions.
In the case of Australia there is no reason to believe that it would translate to Fiji in any way because of the different competitive airline structure. Most of the discussions I have heard are based on an incomplete knowledge of the basis for the issues that are causing concern. Read more…
