Fiji Marriott Momi Bay’s Impactful World Mangrove Day Event

Nadi, Fiji, 02 August 2024– Marriott International’s Serve 360 initiative is a commitment to making a positive and sustainable impact wherever the company does business. Guided by this vision, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay marked World Mangrove Day on Friday, 26th July, with a Mangrove Planting event, co-hosted by the Mamanuca Environment Society.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from 40 associates and guests who joined efforts in planting 1000 mangroves. This initiative is part of the resort’s ambitious goal to plant 3000 mangroves by the end of 2024, reinforcing our commitment to preserving and enhancing local ecosystems.

As part of the resort’s ongoing Good Travel sustainability program, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay invites guests to engage in meaningful sustainability activities every Friday. Guests can participate in mangrove planting, coral gardening, and fish house building, offering a unique opportunity to give back to the community while enjoying their holiday. These activities are provided free-of-charge for our guests and are designed to promote environmental stewardship and support local conservation efforts.

“Our dedication to sustainability is at the core of our operations,” said Silvano Dressino, General Manager at Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay. “We have hired a dedicated sustainability manager, Mereoni Mataika, to lead and expand our initiatives. World Mangrove Day provides a fantastic opportunity for our associates and guests to make a meaningful environmental impact. We are excited to see the positive effects of our efforts and to continue working towards our mangrove planting goals.”

Mereoni Mataika, Sustainability Manager for Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, plays a crucial role in driving the resort’s environmental initiatives. She oversees the planning and implementation of various sustainability projects, ensuring they align with the resort’s environmental goals. Furthermore, Mereoni also works closely with local communities and environmental organizations to foster collaboration and maximize the impact of the resort’s efforts.

“Engaging in sustainability initiatives like mangrove planting allows our guests and staff to experience a ‘Momi Moment’ — a unique connection to the environment and local community beyond their stay. These activities not only enrich their holiday, but also foster a sense of pride and responsibility towards preserving our natural surroundings.”
In celebration of World Mangrove Day, the resort’s beverage team also crafted two unique cocktails: the Mangrove Martini and Coastal Breeze featuring fresh herbs from the resort’s garden. For every cocktail purchased, the hotel donated FJD12 to the Mamanuca Environment Society (MES), supporting ongoing joint efforts towards ocean conservation in Fiji.

Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay remains committed to advancing environmental sustainability and fostering community involvement through these impactful initiatives. The resort’s efforts contribute to the broader global movement for environmental conservation and underscore its role in promoting sustainable tourism practices.
