Fiji Times Thursday 17 August 2017 THE revelation that anaemia has emerged as one of Fiji’s major public health problems is going to attract attention.
National Food and Nutrition Centre manager Ateca Kama confirmed that anaemia had shown the highest increase of all medical variables surveyed in the 2014-2015 National Nutrition Survey.
The survey report released by the centre yesterday confirms anaemia had worsened compared with statistics recorded in the 2004 periodical survey conducted by the centre.
As our report on Page 3 today points out, the statistics revealed that since 2004, anaemia among children less than five years old rose by 14.2 per cent and also rose by 16.5 per cent among schoolchildren between the ages of five to 14 years.
It said 43.5 per cent of schoolchildren between the ages of 15 and 17 years suffer from anaemia. Read more…
