National Coffee Barista Competition at HOTEC 2018

The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association, in partnership with Fiji Coffee and FRANKE Coffee Systems of Switzerland, is pleased to announce the staging of an annual National Barista Competition, to be held during the 2018 HOTEC,
November 1st & 2nd, 2018.

FHTA CEO, Fantasha Lockington said, “we are delighted to secure such stakeholders as Fiji Coffee and FRANKE for this competition and their partnership with us will ensure that our Barista’s continue to improve their skills and delivery of outstanding coffee”.

Fiji Coffee’s Neil Underhill said the company would contribute cash prizes of $1,000.00 for 1st place, $500.00 for 2nd and $250.00 for 3rd. He said FRANKE would also contribute prizes for the event. He said one of the objectives is to eventually get baristas skilled to the point whereby they could compete in the World Barista Competition.

The 3 judges for the 2018 event are:

Shakil “Zoro” Bhamji      Barista Trainer – Fiji Coffee

The competition is open to staff employed by Full Members of the FHTA and will be limited to 20 participants, on a first come, first accepted basis, with the Entry Form available on the Association’s website.

Competitors will serve one (1) beverage from all three (3) categories of drinks (espresso, milk beverage, signature beverage) to each of the 3 judges, the competitor decides which order the beverages are served. Five competitors
will move into the second round, to be held on Day 2 of HOTEC with the winners announced at the prize giving ceremony.
