(NATADOLA, FIJI) Thursday 7th March 2018 – InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa is proud to announce the successful launch of a new Coral Gardening programme – the ‘Our Ocean Guardians’ project, an initiative by the resorts dive operations team, Reef Safari.
With an increased focus on coral health and coral resilience, the Reef Safari team at the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa has worked together with our guests to successfully plant over 50 corals in the four months through the Reef-O-Logy activity under the ‘Our Ocean Guardians Project’. This initiative has seen over 257 healthy and happy coral plants being grown onsite, including three more species of heat resilient coral. (https://vivanteliving.com/)
“After an intensive three month study of the surrounding marine environment, our Reef Safari Marine Scientists identified an ideal nursery area for coral propagation. Our Reef Safari team used the technique of inserting coral pieces between strands of rope to encourage them to grow and flourish,” said Mr. Andrew Davidson, Area General Manager South Pacific at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa.
“The basic rule for the gardeners is always to engage people in hands-on activity that gives something permanent back to the reef. We want to give our guests the opportunity to participate and contribute to making a difference towards our future.” said Mr. Andrew Davidson, Area General Manager South Pacific at InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa. “The oceans make up 71% of the world’s surface – if we don’t make strides to protect it, then who will?”
Guests at the resort can participate in ‘Our Ocean Guardians’ regardless of age. This project has been integrated into the Planet Trekker Kids Club in their “Marine Life Under the Sea with Our Marine Scientist” programme. The inspiration behind this is the resort and Reef Safari’s dedication to educate everyone on the importance of coral reefs and issues impacting the marine ecosystem which when everyone works together, can be lessened or even alleviated.
