Nadi, Fiji, Monday, 5th June 2023 – Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay has commissioned local artist, Stanley Joseph Waradi to design an upcycled marine sculpture depicting the world’s fragile ecosystem in celebration of World Environment Day.
Named Taukei Momi, which translates to Guardian of Momi, this remarkable sculpture aims to raise awareness about the endangered reefs and fragile marine life in Fiji.
The artwork is constructed using discarded umbrellas, reinforcement steel, and various scrap metal and plastic gathered from the resort. The bodies of the sculpture’s three dolphins and one whale feature designs inspired by traditional Fijian patterns frequently seen in the country’s cultural art.
Stanley Joseph Waradi, the artist behind this innovative creation, expressed his vision, saying, “This artwork represents a fresh approach to recycling by transforming waste that would otherwise harm nature and marine life into incredible art pieces that showcase the beauty and vulnerability of marine ecosystems. As a recycling artist, my goal is to address the issue of waste by promoting its reuse in a manner that encourages creative thinking, as opposed to perpetuating the consumerism that poses a threat to the environment.”
This collaboration between the resort and the local artist is not their first joint endeavor. In 2022, Stanley was commissioned to craft the sculpture “Na i Qasiqasi ni vonu,” meaning voyage of the turtles, for Momi’s acclaimed Quan Spa.
Silvano Dressino, the General Manager of Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled to once again work with Stanley to not only showcase the incredible talent and culture of our local community to our guests but also provide an educational experience that highlights the fragility of our precious surroundings.”
Taukei Momi will be submerged in the resort’s lagoon and will feature underwater lights illuminating the whale and dolphins. Guests will have the opportunity to explore the sculpture during the day or night. Serving as a refuge for smaller marine organisms from predators and the elements, the artwork will also serve as an educational attraction within the resort.
The project commenced in December 2022 and required Stanley a total of 149 days, equivalent to 1788 hours, to complete.
Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay has been collaborating with the Mamanuca Environment Society since 2022, leading efforts to support local communities, protect the environment, and promote sustainable experiences throughout Fiji.
