InterContinental Fiji’s Innovative Beach Cleaning Initiative

On September 14th, 2023, InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, which is part of IHG Hotels & Resorts and owned by the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), proudly announced a groundbreaking initiative aimed at preserving the natural beauty of Natadola Beach and combating plastic pollution in the ocean. Situated on one of the world’s finest beaches, the luxury resort has invested in cutting-edge technology known as the Manta Beach Cleaner, becoming the first resort in Fiji to adopt this innovative approach to environmental sustainability as part of IHG’s Journey To Tomorrow program.

Lachlan Walker, Portfolio General Manager of IHG Hotels & Resorts, FNPF Owned Hotels, expressed their excitement about introducing the Manta Beach Cleaner to Natadola Beach. He emphasized their commitment to safeguarding Fiji’s most significant asset, its environment, and how this investment aligns with IHG’s broader sustainability goals under the ‘Journey To Tomorrow’ program, reflecting their dedication to environmentally responsible practices across all their properties.

By being the first resort in Fiji to implement the Manta Beach Cleaner, InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa is setting a noteworthy example in environmental sustainability within the region. Their proactive approach paves the way for other large-scale hospitality establishments to consider similar initiatives.

The Manta Beach Cleaner boasts several notable features, including its innovative system equipped with a fixed blade designed to collect and filter sand from seaweed, rubbish, rubble, and debris. It offers efficient cleaning capabilities, with a working depth ranging from 0 to 20 cm and a working width of 160 cm, allowing the machine to cover an impressive 20,000 square meters per hour. The machine’s waste management system employs two vertical sieves with alternating motion, reducing stress on the equipment and efficiently separating waste from clean sand. It’s designed to be adaptable to various needs, suitable for tractors starting from 35 Hp, and provides versatility through easily interchangeable sieves, one with a finer mesh and one with a larger mesh. Furthermore, the machine’s structure is built for durability, with full hot-dip galvanization and paint to ensure long-lasting performance.

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa’s commitment to sustainability and their investment in the Manta Beach Cleaner showcases their dedication to protecting the environment and preserving the pristine beauty of Natadola Beach.
