Tuesday, 17 July 2018 – The Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA) kicked off its next series of Awareness Sessions for its members yesterday that included updates on legislation changes, policy requirements and staff welfare initiatives. Presenters with expertise in the relevant fields included Iris Low-McKenzie, CEO for Save The Children who raised awareness on “Child Protection & Handling Practices for Hotels” and minimising risks to children.
Chief Executive Officer of FHTA, Fantasha Lockington stated, “We make these awareness sessions available as part of our membership benefits to ensure our members know about upcoming legislation, understand compliance issues and get general updates. The tourism industry employs the largest number of people where 1 in 3 people are directly or indirectly employed so we must constantly provide development opportunities and best practice updates that will upskill industry workers and maintain the industry’s continued growth”.
The Suva session included a briefing from a legal practitioner on Sexual Harassment Policies for the Workplace and updates on the new On-line Safety Bill and discussed why workplaces must not only have these policies in place but provide training and awareness for their staff. As well, the recently introduced microinsurance package for tourism industry workers was discussed as an affordable option at $52 per annum for workers that did not have access to personal
insurance which provided cover for term life, funeral expenses, property and personal accident cover.
The next Awareness Session is scheduled for Friday 20th July in Nadi and FHTA members will be able to access the next series of sessions in August that will include updates from the Fiji Revenue & Customs Services on the 2018/2019 budget.
