Denarau Island, Fiji (April 4, 2024) – Club Wyndham Denarau Island has collaborated with the Ministry of Forestry of Fiji to conduct a mangrove planting activity at Natabua Seaside, Lautoka, scheduled for the morning of April 5, 2024. This initiative underscores the resort’s strong commitment to sustainable tourism and recognizes the crucial role of mangroves in coastal protection and wildlife preservation.
The resort plans to plant 2,500 mangrove seedlings, surpassing the previous record of 2,400 in the area, with the Ministry of Forestry assisting in sourcing the seedlings.
“We take immense pride in setting an example through our efforts to promote sustainable tourism and preserve the environment,” said William Work, Resort Manager of Club Wyndham Denarau Island.
“By involving our team members, club members, and the local community in this mangrove planting initiative, we not only seek to improve our natural surroundings but also encourage a deeper connection with nature among our guests and residents,” he added.
The Ministry of Forestry has collaborated with local community groups, including church and single mothers’ groups, as well as village youth selling mangrove seedlings, to gather seedlings for the planting activity. Club Wyndham Denarau Island is exploring the possibility of making this an annual event and expanding its planting efforts to other areas on the island.
According to a report by the World Bank, Fiji is highly susceptible to tropical cyclones. Mangroves play a vital role in mitigating the impacts of such weather events by acting as natural barriers that reduce erosion and absorb the force of strong waves generated by cyclones.
Additionally, mangroves create a unique ecosystem that provides essential habitats for a diverse range of local wildlife, contributing significantly to the preservation of biodiversity.
