BBC, Tuesday 23 Jan – One person is missing after an avalanche at a Japanese ski resort which may have been triggered by a nearby volcanic eruption. At least 14 people were injured in the incident near Kusatsu in central Gunma prefecture, say officials. Japanese media report say several people have been rescued from the mountain..Authorities say Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, 150km (93 miles) from Tokyo, erupted at the same time, but it is not clear if that is what triggered the avalanche.
