Anthony: Workers need to test laws

FIJI Trades Union Congress

Fiji Times Friday 08 September 2017  FIJI Trades Union Congress national secretary Felix Anthony says there is a need for unionists to test out whether workers can go on strike, especially when the laws permit industrial action.

While speaking to members of the Federated Airlines Staff Association in Nadi on Wednesday night, he said no employee had really been able to go on strike.

“The law in this country allows industrial action but the question is do we in reality have the right to go on strike as workers,” he said. “That’s the big question and we need to test that out and this is a perfect opportunity to do that.”

The association members and staff of Air Terminal Services have been engaged in a possible industrial action against the ATS management team which they claimed have not been able to meet several of their motions that included the failure to pay employees cost of living adjustment (COLA) over the past 10 years and the unfair treatment of workers facing disciplinary action.
