Fiji Times Thursday 17 August 2017 SEEING the decline in kawakawa and donu numbers from their suppliers has prompted a local fish exporter to pledge its support to 4HJ.
Tavua-based fish and agricultural product exporter Maqere Exports pledged to stop selling kawakawa and donu during its peak breeding months — June through September — to help fish stocks recover.
A statement yesterday said Maqere Exports joined a rapidly growing list of 4FJ business champions in support of the Government’s efforts to revive the A-grade fish which are important to the food security and livelihoods of Fijians.
The company’s export manager, Ashiana Jamal, said they had seen the decline firsthand of these fish from their local supplier.
“We want to support this Ministry of Fisheries initiative and also to see more of kawakawa and donu again for our business and for future generations,” said Ms Jamal.
She said they had plans to expand to Australia but because of the decline in fish stock there was not enough supply from fishermen to fulfil the orders. Read more…
