In a landmark collaboration with the Ministry of Fisheries, Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay is embarking on a transformative journey to restore and enhance a giant clam sanctuary nestled within the pristine waters of Momi Bay. Demonstrating its steadfast commitment to environmental sustainability, the resort is leading the charge to revitalize marine life, particularly focusing on the conservation and growth of the giant clam population, with a keen eye on ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
Formalized in 2019 through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the partnership between Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay and the Ministry of Fisheries underscores a shared dedication to preserving Fiji’s invaluable marine biodiversity and safeguarding its natural resources. This ambitious project signifies a significant stride toward nurturing a resilient and vibrant ecosystem within the region.
The initiative kicked off with the introduction of five sizable giant clams, each averaging 35cm in diameter, into the specially designated sanctuary area. These majestic creatures serve as the cornerstone for the rejuvenation of the clam population, with a primary objective of fostering sustainable growth and providing a protected haven for marine life to thrive.
“We firmly believe in the power of collaborative efforts, and this partnership epitomizes our unwavering commitment to nurturing a symbiotic relationship between tourism and the environment,” remarked Mereoni Mataika, the Resort’s Sustainability Manager. “We extend an open invitation to our guests, staff, and the local community to join us in safeguarding the splendor and diversity of Momi Bay for the enjoyment of future generations,” she continued.
In addition to the sanctuary establishment, the resort endeavors to actively involve guests and the local community in this critical environmental initiative through a variety of educational programs, guided activities, and interactive experiences. These initiatives aim to raise awareness about the significance of marine conservation and showcase the resort’s ongoing dedication to sustainable tourism practices, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between visitors and the natural world.
