Fiji Times, Sat Feb 10 – A $4 million investment will uplift and transform the well- known colonial built Grand Eastern Hotel in Labasa.
This investment will include 24 new rooms added to the existing facility and a total renovation to the existing rooms.
Labasa business tycoon and head of Charan Jeath Singh group of companies, Charan Jeath Singh said it was time for transformation. With the changing market trend in the hotel industry around the globe, Mr Singh said he needed to upgrade the hotel rooms into expected international standard.
“We are investing $3m to build 24 new rooms which will sit about 2metres from ground level because of the risk of flood that Labasa Town is known for,” he said.
“These rooms will be up to par and will suit today’s market standard because we want the best for our guests.
“Over the past years, we have had a lot of bookings at Grand Eastern because of its setup and secluded in its own part of town.”
However, these high bookings, Mr Singh said could not be catered all at once at the hotel.
Instead, these guests have had to be booked in private homes that also belong to Mr Singh’s company.
“Sometimes, while we are fully booked, we have guests calling in and wanting to book a room at Grand Eastern Hotel for a shorter period but these rooms are being occupied for longer period stay,”
“That is why we have decided to extend the hotel with an extra 24 rooms and will also be a double storey building to keep our guests safe from the flood.
“Work has started on this new project and it should be ready by early next year.”
When this project is completed, Mr Singh said an extra $1m would be used to upgrade the existing room standard.
