Fiji Times, 27th April – About 200 guests and staff gathered beachside at the Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort and Spa to mark Anzac Day in a solemn ceremony yesterday morning.
Resort general manager Peter Hopgood said he was overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of his staff members and the huge turnout by guests this year.
Mr Hopgood said it was very special to commemorate the sacrifice made by thousands of servicemen in a country that has benefitted from Australian and New Zealand military support during recent crises.
“To my Fijian family, we thank you for allowing the Australians and New Zealanders present here today (yesterday), the opportunity to honour our service personnel,” he said.
“We all know that you have had your own challenges in recent months with cyclones and flooding. We also know that in our time of need, it is the military forces from Australia and New Zealand that come and assist us to rebuild our beautiful country.”
Mr Hopgood added Anzac Day was not an event held to celebrate or glorify war, but rather to remember those who had served and paid the ultimate price during conflict and crises.
